10 Essential Concrete Pump Truck Safety Rules Every Operator Must Know
Jul. 15, 2026
1. Do Not Operate the Boom When Wind Speed Exceeds Level 6
A concrete boom pump truck should not use the placing boom for concrete distribution when wind speed exceeds Level 6.
Because the boom is extremely long and heavy, strong wind creates a large wind load that affects the stability of the entire machine.
Operating the boom in strong winds can easily cause:
Concrete pump truck overturning
Boom instability
Serious equipment damage
Operator injuries
Always check weather conditions before starting boom operations.

2. Never Connect Vertical Pipes Directly to the Pump Outlet
The vertical delivery pipeline should not be directly connected to the concrete pump outlet.
Correct installation requirements:
A horizontal pipe section of at least 10 meters should be installed before the vertical pipeline.
A check valve should be installed on the horizontal pipe close to the pump outlet.
This design helps reduce pressure impact and prevents concrete backflow, improving pumping safety and pipeline reliability.
3. Keep the Pump Truck Away from Excavation Edges
The concrete pump truck must maintain a safe distance from foundation pits, trenches, and excavation edges.
Many overturning accidents are caused by unstable ground conditions.
During pumping operations:
The outriggers generate extremely high pressure on the ground.
Soft soil or ground collapse may cause the supports to sink.
Uneven support can result in pump truck overturning.
Always ensure the ground is strong, flat, and capable of supporting the machine.

4. Clean the Hopper Before Pumping
Before starting concrete pumping, the mixing hopper must be cleaned and free of foreign materials.
Debris inside the hopper can cause:
Concrete blockage
Pumping system failure
Pipeline blockage
Difficult maintenance work
Experienced operators understand that a blocked concrete pipeline is one of the most troublesome problems during pumping operations.
5. Do Not Move the Truck When the Boom Is Fully Extended
When the placing boom is fully extended and the outriggers are supporting the machine, do not move the pump truck chassis.
Safety requirements:
Never move the vehicle with the boom extended.
Do not install delivery pipes larger than the specified diameter.
Safety ropes must be installed on connected end hoses.
Incorrect operation may cause boom damage or serious accidents.
6. Fully Extend and Secure All Outriggers Before Operation
All outriggers must be fully extended and properly supported before operating the boom.
A concrete pump truck with unstable or improperly supported outriggers must never perform boom movements.
Proper outrigger installation is one of the most important safety steps for preventing overturning accidents.
7. Never Use the Boom as a Crane
A concrete pump truck is not a lifting machine.
The boom must never be used to:
Lift heavy objects
Pull equipment
Move construction materials
Although some operators may have attempted this method, it is extremely dangerous.
Excessive loading can cause:
Boom structure damage
Boom fracture
Machine overturning
Fatal accidents
Always use proper lifting equipment for lifting operations.
8. Never Open Concrete Pipes or Hydraulic Lines Under Pressure
During pumping operation, or when the system pressure has not been fully released, never open any concrete delivery pipeline or hydraulic oil pipe.
Do not dismantle hydraulic valves or components while the system is pressurized.
High-pressure concrete and hydraulic oil can spray out with extreme force and may cause serious injuries.
Before maintenance:
Stop pumping
Release system pressure completely
Confirm safety before inspection
9. Clean All Concrete After Pumping Operation
After completing pumping work, all remaining concrete inside the hopper and delivery pipeline must be completely removed.
Cleaning procedures should include:
Cleaning the concrete hopper
Flushing the delivery pipeline
Cleaning the concrete pump system
Checking pipeline condition
Proper cleaning prevents:
Concrete hardening inside pipes
Pipeline blockage
Equipment damage
Reduced service life
10. Do Not Use Compressed Air to Clean Boom Pipelines
Compressed air should never be used to clean the boom delivery pipeline.
The high pressure generated by compressed air can create dangerous situations.
When folding the boom:
Follow the correct folding sequence.
Operate according to the specific pump truck model.
Always follow the manufacturer's operating instructions.
Different concrete pump truck designs may require different boom folding procedures.
