How to Prevent a Concrete Pump Truck from Tipping Over
The boom of a concrete pump truck is primarily used for concrete placement. During normal operation, the boom continuously changes position and orientation to reach different pouring areas. As the boom position changes, the overall center of gravity of the truck also changes.
In addition, boom movement, vibration during pumping, and ground settlement can further affect the vehicle's stability. If the center of gravity moves outside the support area formed by the outriggers, the entire concrete pump truck may become unstable and tip over.
Therefore, operators must always remain alert during operation. Today, most major concrete pump truck manufacturers have introduced various intelligent anti-tipping systems to improve operating safety. These systems can generally be divided into two main categories.
1. Tilt Sensors and Outrigger Load Sensors
Tilt Sensor
A tilt sensor monitors the levelness of the entire vehicle and continuously sends real-time information about the vehicle's inclination angle. This can effectively reduce the risk of tipping caused by gradual ground settlement.
The primary function of a tilt sensor is to continuously measure the inclination angle of the vehicle. High-precision sensors can achieve measurement accuracy better than 0.05°.
The system can also filter out minor vibrations caused by engine operation and concrete pumping. When the lateral inclination exceeds approximately 3°, or the longitudinal inclination exceeds approximately 5°, the system can trigger an alarm.
These systems provide an additional layer of protection by allowing the operator to react before the vehicle reaches a dangerous inclination.
Outrigger Load Sensors
Outrigger load sensors continuously monitor the load applied to each outrigger. If the loads on the two outriggers on one side fall below a predetermined threshold, the system can issue a warning or stop the current boom movement.
However, intelligent safety systems are not a substitute for professional operation.
Some types of axle-mounted load sensors can only detect the load in a particular direction. Because the vehicle may move or shake during concrete pumping, and because the vertical alignment of different outriggers may vary, the measured load may not always accurately represent the actual stability condition.
As a result, false alarms or missed signals are still possible.
2. Operator Experience Is Still Critical
There are many factors that can cause a concrete pump truck to tip over. In addition to using necessary safety protection systems, the operator's judgment and experience at the job site remain extremely important.
An experienced operator is often the most important safety system.
The following conditions are particularly dangerous and require careful assessment before and during operation.
1. Soft or Unstable Ground
Soft soil may not provide sufficient bearing capacity for the outriggers. Under the weight and dynamic loads of the pump truck, the ground can gradually sink, causing the vehicle to tilt.
Always inspect the ground before deploying the outriggers and use suitable support plates or mats when necessary.
2. Hollow or Underground Areas
Areas with cavities, underground voids, trenches, backfilled sections, or insufficiently compacted soil can collapse under outrigger loads.
The surface may appear solid while the underlying structure is unable to support the concentrated load of the outriggers.
3. Outdoor and Off-Road Operations
Outdoor construction sites often have unpredictable ground conditions. Slopes, loose soil, uneven surfaces, hidden drainage channels, and other obstacles can significantly affect the stability of a concrete pump truck.
Operators should carefully assess the site before positioning the vehicle.
4. Be Extremely Careful Near Edges
Special caution is required when operating close to excavations, slopes, retaining walls, road edges, or other drop-offs.
The outrigger must be positioned at a safe distance from the edge, and the ground must have sufficient bearing capacity. Ground failure near the edge can cause sudden loss of support and lead to a rollover.
5. Avoid Dangerous Road Conditions
Whenever possible, avoid positioning or operating the pump truck on dangerous, heavily sloped, uneven, or unstable roads.
If the site cannot be avoided, the operator should evaluate the road and ground conditions carefully and ensure that the vehicle is properly supported before beginning pumping operations.
3. Use the Correct Concrete Placement Range
A concrete pump truck generally has four basic boom placement configurations:
Full placement range
Front placement
Left-side placement
Right-side placement
Although the diagrams used to illustrate these operating ranges may look simple, understanding the permitted working range is extremely important in actual operation.
The boom's position directly affects the distribution of weight and the overall center of gravity of the vehicle. Therefore, operators must always keep the boom within the permitted working range specified for the particular pump truck.
Rear Placement Restrictions
To improve overall vehicle stability and reduce the risk of tipping when placing concrete behind the truck, additional restrictions may apply during full-range operation.
As shown in Figure 2, when the boom is positioned toward the rear of the vehicle, concrete placement is not permitted when the boom is within ±12.5° of the vehicle centerline.
This restricted area is shown as the shaded section in Figure 2.
In addition, the horizontal boom limitation requires a minimum restricted distance of 6,501 mm from the specified reference position.
Operators must strictly follow the manufacturer's specified boom working envelope and restricted areas. Never force the boom into a prohibited position simply to reach a difficult pouring location.
4. Safety Comes Before Reach
Preventing a concrete pump truck from tipping over requires more than intelligent safety systems. Tilt sensors and outrigger load sensors can provide valuable warnings and automatic protection, but they cannot completely replace proper site assessment and experienced operation.
Before starting work, operators should carefully check:
Ground bearing capacity
Soil conditions and possible underground voids
Distance from excavations and edges
Outrigger deployment and support
Vehicle levelness
Boom working range
Weather and site conditions
Potential obstacles around the boom
Any abnormal movement or instability during pumping
Most importantly, never operate outside the manufacturer's specified working range or ignore warning signals.
A properly positioned pump truck, correctly deployed outriggers, suitable ground support, and an experienced operator together provide the foundation for safe and efficient concrete placement.
