History and Development of Concrete Trailer Pumps

Sep. 04, 2026

History and Development of Concrete Trailer Pumps

Concrete trailer pumps, also known as stationary concrete pumps or concrete line pumps, are important equipment for transporting and placing concrete on construction sites.

The development of concrete trailer pumps is closely connected with the history of concrete pumping technology and concrete pump trucks. Many important technologies were initially developed for stationary pumps and were later applied to truck-mounted concrete pumps.

Understanding the history of concrete trailer pumps is useful not only for construction equipment professionals and sales teams, but also for engineers, operators, and researchers who want to better understand the development of modern concrete pumping technology.

Early Development of Concrete Pumps

Research into mechanical concrete pumping began in the early 20th century.

In 1902, a French inventor obtained an early patent related to concrete pumping technology. In 1907, researchers in Germany began developing concrete pumps. In 1913, an American inventor also obtained a patent and manufactured an early concrete pump, although the machine was not successfully put into practical use.

In 1927, German engineer Fritz Hell designed and manufactured a concrete pump that was successfully used in practical construction for the first time. This represented an important milestone in the history of concrete pumping equipment.

Development of Mechanical Concrete Pumps

In 1930, a German manufacturer developed a vertical single-cylinder concrete pump equipped with a ball-valve piston system.

The machine used a crank-and-rocker mechanism for power transmission. However, its vertical single-cylinder configuration resulted in a relatively complicated structure and limited operating performance.

In 1932, Dutch engineer J. C. Kooyman made major improvements to the vertical-cylinder design.

He changed the cylinder from a vertical configuration to a horizontal one and developed what became known as the Kooyman-type concrete pump.

The machine featured:

  • A horizontal pumping cylinder

  • Two rotary valves

  • Connecting-rod-driven valve operation

  • Improved pumping reliability

  • A more practical overall structure

The improved design significantly increased the reliability of concrete pumping and laid an important foundation for the development of modern concrete pumps.

Because of its practical design and reliable operation, the Kooyman concrete pump attracted considerable interest, and a number of companies obtained licenses to manufacture similar equipment.

Post-World War II Development

After World War II, large-scale reconstruction projects created enormous demand for construction equipment.

The extensive rebuilding of cities and infrastructure led to increased use of mechanical concrete pumps. Concrete pumping became increasingly attractive because it could significantly improve construction efficiency and reduce the labor required for manual concrete placement.

During the mid-1950s, German manufacturer Torkret began developing hydraulic concrete pumping technology using water as the working medium.

This represented an important transition from mechanically driven pumping systems toward hydraulic technology.

The Introduction of Fully Hydraulic Concrete Pumps

A major milestone occurred in 1959, when German manufacturer Schwing developed a fully hydraulic concrete pump.

The introduction of fully hydraulic pumping technology established an important technical foundation for modern concrete pumps.

Hydraulic systems offered significant advantages compared with traditional mechanical systems, including:

  • Smooth pumping operation

  • Higher pumping pressure

  • Better control

  • Improved reliability

  • Greater flexibility

  • Easier adaptation to different pumping requirements

Germany subsequently became one of the world's leading centers for concrete pump design and manufacturing.

Two major German manufacturers, Schwing and Putzmeister, became globally recognized leaders in concrete pumping technology.

Their products covered a wide range of concrete pump models and applications, with each company developing its own technical solutions.

For example, Putzmeister became known for technologies including closed hydraulic circuits and S-tube distribution valves, while Schwing developed its own hydraulic systems and distinctive rock valve technology.

These innovations contributed significantly to the development of modern stationary concrete pumps and truck-mounted concrete pump trucks.

Development of Concrete Pumps in Japan

Japan began developing its concrete pumping industry in the 1950s.

Around 1950, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries introduced mechanical concrete pumping technology from West Germany.

The Japanese concrete pumping industry developed rapidly during the 1970s, with several major manufacturers becoming involved in the sector.

These included:

  • Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries

  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

  • Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo

  • Shin-Ko

  • Niigata

  • ShinMaywa

Japanese manufacturers contributed to the development of concrete pumping equipment and related construction machinery.

However, toward the end of the 20th century, the Asian financial crisis and prolonged economic difficulties in Japan slowed the development of the domestic concrete pumping machinery market.

Development of Concrete Pumps in the United States

The United States also played an important role in the development of concrete pumping technology.

Mechanical concrete pump development in the United States dates back to the early 20th century. In the 1920s, American companies developed early mechanical concrete pumps.

By the 1950s, hydraulic concrete pumps had entered production.

During the mid-1960s, trailer-mounted concrete pumps became increasingly important. Improvements in distribution valve technology and other key components further increased the reliability and efficiency of concrete pumping equipment.

The development of trailer concrete pumps was particularly important because these machines could be transported to different construction sites and connected to delivery pipelines without requiring a truck-mounted boom.

This basic concept remains widely used today.

Development of Concrete Trailer Pumps in China

China began introducing foreign concrete pumping technology during the 1950s.

Early domestically manufactured mechanical concrete pumps had relatively low technical performance and were produced in small quantities.

In the early 1960s, Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant developed a stationary concrete pump with a pumping capacity of approximately 40 m³/h, based on the Soviet C-284 model.

Although the machine was used in some construction projects, it was not widely adopted.

During the early 1970s, Chinese research institutions and machinery manufacturers began conducting more systematic research into different types of concrete pumps.

The former Institute of Construction Machinery Research and Shenyang Vibrator Factory jointly developed the HB-8 concrete pump.

The former National Construction Commission Institute of Construction Machinery also worked with Hunan Changde Machinery Factory to develop the HB-15 concrete pump.

Meanwhile, the Hydraulic Machinery Factory of the Seventh Engineering Bureau of the Ministry of Electric Power developed the HB-30 concrete pump, referring to Japan's 700S-1 concrete pump technology.

In 1978, Beijing Construction Engineering Research Institute, together with Beijing Construction Machinery Repair Factory and other industrial partners, successfully developed the HBJ-30 squeeze-type concrete pump.

These developments demonstrate that China conducted extensive research into different concrete pumping technologies during the 1970s.

However, only a limited number of models, including the HB-8 and HB-30, eventually entered relatively large-scale production.

China's Entry into the Era of Pumped Concrete

At the beginning of the 1980s, China's total inventory of domestically produced concrete pumps was still fewer than approximately 200 units, while truck-mounted concrete pump trucks were not yet widely available domestically.

During this period, major construction projects in China relied heavily on imported concrete pumping equipment.

Large infrastructure projects required higher-capacity and more reliable concrete placement equipment, creating strong demand for advanced pumping technology.

In the mid-1980s, China's concrete pumping machinery industry entered a period of rapid development.

To promote the development of ready-mix concrete and modern construction technology, China's construction authorities supported the introduction of advanced concrete pump manufacturing technologies from internationally recognized companies.

Several domestic manufacturers introduced foreign technology and began improving their own concrete pump designs.

This marked an important transition for China from traditional concrete placement methods toward the modern pumped-concrete era.
